Michael G Ryan Son & Daughters Funeral Directors is a family-run funeral home established on 1st January 1998, located at 106β108 Malpas Road, Newport, Gwent. Founded by Michael Ryan, who began his career as a carpenter and joiner before discovering a deep calling for the funeral profession after refurbishing a funeral home in Newport, the business has grown into a trusted name in the local community. Michael was so moved by the respect and compassion shown to the deceased and their families that he dedicated himself fully to the industry, ultimately building his own funeral home.
The business is truly a family affair. Michael's daughters Louise and Rachael have both followed in his footsteps. Louise became Britain's Youngest Undertaker after directing her first funeral at the age of 19, a record later taken by her sister Rachael, who directed her first funeral the day after her 16th birthday in 2011. Rachael's journey was documented in a BBC documentary titled 'Britain's Youngest Undertaker', showcasing the compassionate and dignified approach the business is committed to.
Serving Newport, Cardiff, and the surrounding areas, the team is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They offer a comprehensive range of funeral services including cremations, burials, green and woodland funerals, unattended cremations, and repatriation, as well as prepaid funeral plans. The branch is part of Funeral Partners Limited and is a member of the National Association of Funeral Directors.

"After contacting another well known funeral directors locally to be told because it was a weekend and bank holiday they would get back to me when they can, I reached out to Michael G Ryan Son & Daughters. During the height of covid it was a difficult time to arrange anything let alone a funeral. Nothing was too much trouble and you gave us great guidance. I can't put into words how much it meant at such a sad time."

It has been over five months since the passing of my father, and I have taken this time to reflect before writing this review to ensure it is measured and free from the immediate emotions of our loss. Despite this, my disappointment with Michael Ryan & Sons has not diminished. From the outset, there was a striking lack of compassion; Michael Ryan did not offer any condolences upon meeting us after my father's passing. The pressure exerted on my elderly grandmother to hastily sign various documents and settle payments was entirely inappropriate and insensitive. On the day of the funeral, to add to our distress, Michael mistakenly addressed me by a wrong name, which was not even remotely related to our family. Such carelessness on a day that demanded the utmost respect and attention to detail only compounded our grief. The height of disrespect was evident in the egregious error on my father's coffin, where our family surname was misspelled. When this was pointed out, Michael's response lacked any hint of apology or remorse. He initially outright denied the mistake. The reverend had to confirm that he had spelt the name wrong, as he wouldn't believe us which was bizarre. To this day, we remain uncertain if the error on the coffin was ever corrected, though they made no mistakes spelling the surname on their invoices. While we did seek the services of another director, Tovey Brothers, who were nothing but professional and respectful, we could not proceed with them because of the undue pressure my grandmother faced from Michael Ryan & Sons to commit prematurely. It was clear that their priority was not the grieving family but rather securing a business transaction with a vulnerable, grieving elderly woman. Their disregard for the emotional well-being of my family was blatant, as they never suggested that my grandmother consult with her grandchildren before making decisions. Please consider this a warning to stay away from Michael Ryan & Sons. Their conduct was not only unprofessional but also deeply disturbing. They showed a profound lack of empathy and respect, focusing solely on financial aspects during a time that should have been handled with dignity and care.
