Apply for probate (if needed)

Once the estate is valued

If probate is needed, you can apply online or by post. The process takes around 4-8 weeks once submitted.

You can apply for probate yourself through GOV.UK, or you can instruct a solicitor or probate specialist to do it for you.

**Applying yourself:**
- Apply online at gov.uk/applying-for-probate
- You will need to complete an inheritance tax form (even if no tax is due)
- The court fee is £273
- You will need to swear or affirm a statement of truth

**Using a specialist:**
- Costs vary: typically 1-3% of the estate value, or a fixed fee
- They handle the paperwork, tax forms, and communication with institutions
- Particularly helpful for complex estates or if you are not confident doing it yourself

Once probate is granted, you receive a Grant of Probate (or Letters of Administration if there is no will). This gives you legal authority to deal with the estate.

What you will need

  • The original will (if there is one)
  • A completed inheritance tax form
  • The estate valuation
  • The court fee (£273)
  • Death certificate
A few hours to prepare; 4-8 weeks for the grant
