Use the Tell Us Once service After a Death | Funeral Directory
4 Step 4 of 18

Use the Tell Us Once service

At the same time as registration

Tell Us Once is a free government service that lets you report the death to most government departments in a single phone call or online session. The registrar will give you a reference number.

Tell Us Once saves you contacting each department separately. It notifies:

- HM Revenue and Customs (tax)
- Department for Work and Pensions (benefits and State Pension)
- Passport Office
- DVLA (driving licence and vehicle registration)
- Local council (council tax, electoral register, Blue Badge, library card)

The registrar will give you a unique reference number. You can then complete the process online or by calling 0800 085 7308.

Not all councils participate, but most do. The registrar will let you know.

What you will need

  • The Tell Us Once reference number (from the registrar)
  • The person's National Insurance number
  • Their date of birth and date of death
  • Details of any benefits they were receiving
  • Details of any local council services they used
15-20 minutes online or by phone
