20/02/25 (morning) Rang Co-op Funeral care, Borough road, Burton upon Trent because I thought they would be the most understanding, compassionate and helpful company to deal with, the Co-op had always seemed to be a reputable company. I needed to arrange a funeral, had looked at their website and picked which funeral plan suited my requirements. Spoke to a very off-hand person, with a very 'can't be bothered tone of voice' and before I had chance to explain properly I was interrupted by this person with ' I have to read this statement first and you can look on the website' or similar words, and proceeded to read said statement, not a compassionate voice or an acknowledgement that I was ringing about a funeral, which could have been for a very loved child or a parent, or actually in my case, me. Told them it all sounded very impersonal and that I wanted a local Burton firm and rang off. Shame I had to give them one star because none is not an option.

It is several weeks now since my mums funeral and I have mixed feelings about my review. The drivers of the second car were absolutely lovely as was the celebrant. All three of these people made such a sad, heartbreaking day bearable and special. Nothing was too much trouble. The funeral director herself, wasn’t so nice, I don’t know if she didn’t know who I was (maybe she thought I was just a friend of the family or random dog walker rather than daughter of the deceased) but when she got out of the car I asked her if my dog was allowed in the car (I’d already cleared it with the crematorium that he could come), she said no your dog cannot even come to the service, I explained that I had already checked and he was allowed. She argued that only service dogs were allowed in the crematorium. I explained again that I had spoken to them and they had said it was fine and they had made a note on the service that he would be in attendance. She replied fine I’d have to check with the following car (which I did and they were so friendly and nice about it). I’m the meantime, the funeral director went to greet my dad and sister who were just coming out of the house, she hugged them and said sorry for your loss. I never got a hug or even a greeting and no comment about my loss. I am still upset to this day, clearly, it was such a hard day and to not even be acknowledged as having lost my mum by the person who should have been looking after us all. I wasn’t going to complain, but all of my friends said I should not have been made to feel like this and since I am still upset about it over a month later, I decided to get it off my chest. I’ve given three stars for the two wonderful drivers of the second car & the fantastic celebrant who on my arrival came over and introduced himself to me and commented on the words in my eulogy. Had I been giving a star rating for the funeral director alone, it would be zero, I don’t know her name, she never introduced herself to me. My dad and sister told me to let it go, but if my raising this prevents another person being made to feel like they did not matter at the funeral of a loved one then it is worth it.

Professional, courteous and, above all, thoughtful service provided for my wife’s funeral today. Every step of the way you supported me at possibly the worst time of my life and completed the burial at Newhall Cemetery with skill and consideration. Many thanks to Rachel and her team - much appreciated.

We used the Co-operative Funeralcare in Borough Road for my sisters funeral. The service we received was amazing considering we were in the middle of the 3rd lockdown. Although visits to the funeral directors was limited to one, and virtually all the arrangements were made over the phone or via email, and despite almost 4 weeks wait due to COVID, I never felt that our needs and that my sister were just one of many. Karen dealt kindly with all my requests and I always felt very comfortable talking to her, and Rachel was my first contact with the company and she was in charge of the funeral on the day. Both ladies were very compassionate and although unable to physically offer comfort, compassion was certainly shown in all dealings. I would highly recommend this funeral directors should you unfortunately have a need. Trust them completely and your loved one will receive the care they so deserve as you say your last goodbye.
